Ellijay, an old Cherokee settlement, was inhabited by the indigenous Cherokee Indians until they were for was first settled by the Cherokee Indians until they were forced to depart from their beautiful home and sent on the Trail of Tears tragedy. The old Indian names of Ellijay and the rivers such as the Coosawattee River still remain as reminders of the Cherokees. Mountaintown and Turniptown are old Cherokee settlements. The name, Ellijay, means New Ground Place, a place which has been freshly prepared for planting. The Ellijay River and Cartecay River run together to form the Coosawattee River which then flows on into Carters Lake which is the deepest lake in Georgia.
Historic downtown Ellijay is a favorite among tourists because it is just a short drive from Atlanta with specialty shops and antique shops.
Ellijay is nestled in the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains where the mountains and the rivers meet. Some of the most scenic views can be seen in Ellijay. Ellijay, in hte north georgia Mountains, is not isolated by any means. Ellijay boasts great local businesses and even some national chains including Starbucks. Ellijay is only a good hour's drive from Atlanta and only 50 minutes to the Town center Mall in Kennesaw.
The beauty is breathtaking. In the spring, the apple orchards are in bloom and scented with delicate apple blossoms. The summer days are warmed with gentle breezes and playing in one of Ellijay's rivers is a great way to cool off. In the fall, the apples are harvested and you'll have a chance to visit the many Ellijay apple orchards to pick or choose your own apples. The cool crisp nights warm up to sunny days and a spectacular patchwork of fall colors are dazzling over the mountains. In the winter, the mountaintops may be glistening with snowy peaks.
Year yound activities are abundant. Some of the finest world class trout fishing occurs in Ellijay.
